William Lewis was the eldest son of Henry and Charlotte Lewis. He was born c1842 and was baptised on 23 October 1842 in St Oswald's Church, Hooe, in East Sussex. He married Ann Barrow on 26 December 1868 at St Peter's church, Ashburnham. Ann was born c1845 in Heathfield, Sussex, and was the daughter of daughter of George Barrow and Caroline Booth. The witnesses at the wedding were William's cousin James Vidler, and his wife Ruth.
