William Sackett was born at 11 Nelson Street, Deal, on 14 March 1847. His parents were Richard Henry and Sarah  Sackett.  Richard, who registered the birth, was a brazier by trade.  William had two older brothers, Richard and John Kemp Sackett, and a sister, Mary Jane.

When he was about 3 years old, William, his mother Sarah and sister Mary were admitted to Eastry workhouse.  The reason for this is not known, but it was assumed that his father had died, and the family had fallen on hard times.  For the following 11 years, the records show that the family lived in the workhouse, making only infrequent visits outside, mainly over the Christmas periods, probably to spend time with relatives who lived in Dover.

By 1861 Sarah had found employment as a housekeeper in Middle Street, Deal, but no record can be found of William and Mary Jane, until William’s marriage to Rachel Link on 27 July 1867 at St Mildred’s, Canterbury.  William’s father was named as Thomas Sackett on the marriage certificate. Thomas was, in fact, William’s uncle.

Rachel was born in 1843, one of the daughters of William and Hannah Link.  The family lived in Mill Cottage, Chartham, but by 1861 they had moved to 16 Castle Row, Canterbury, where William Link was a labourer.  Rachel had given birth to two children before she married William, but they were brought up with the Sackett name.

William and Rachel set up home at No. 4 Gas Row, Canterbury, raised a large family, and later moved to 8 Artillery Street.  By 1891 William was employed as an engine driver at the gas works, a job he was to do for the rest of his working life.

They moved to No. 3 Ivy Place, Wincheap sometime after 1901, and later moved again, as William died at 29 Wincheap Grove.  He was buried on 13 August 1918. Rachel died in Nunnery Fields Hospital, Canterbury and was buried on 2 August 1924.  They share the same grave in Canterbury cemetery.
