Walter Smith was the eldest son of Peter Smith and Harriet Woodgate. He was born on 18 April 1845 in Chiddingly, East Sussex. Walter married Naomi Gower on 8 September 1869 in Chiddingly Church. Naomi was born on 24 January 1849, also in Chiddingly, and was the daughter of George & Mary Gower. On the 1861 census the Smith and Gower families are found living next door to each other in Chiddingly. Walter worked as a miller, and he and Naomi raised four daughters. The family have been found on various census returns living in villages near to Chiddingly. Naomi died on 31 October 1894, at Western Road, Lewes. Her sister, Edith Kemp was the informant at her death. Naomi was was buried at St Anne's, Lewes and is mentioned on her parent's headstone at Zoar Baptist Chapel, Lower Dicker. Walter married Ellen Kemsley in 1896. We believe Ellen's was a widow, whose maiden name was Page, and that she had a daughter.
