Mr. Walter Christian of 38 Barrack-road who died on Thursday of last week , in his 83rd year was a native of Bexhill. He was born in an old house close to St. Peter's Church, which is now a farm, and had resided in the town all his life. For over fifty years he was gardener at Millfield, Belle Hill, and >continued in the employ of Miss Scrivens after the death of her father. He was a frequent exhibitor and prize winner at flower shows at Bexhill, Hastings and Eastbourne and on many occasions he also acted as judge. For over 60 years he was closely associated with Belle Hill Chapel, and at one time or another he had held all the offices open to a layman. For a period of years he was chapel keeper at Belle Hill and also taught in Sunday School. His services were also given to the Wesleyan cause in the local churches and chapels. In his early days Mr. Christian led the singing at Belle Hill with a concertina, and subsequently taught himself to play the harmonium, which was given to the chapel. Mr. Christian was survived by two sons, Mr. George Christian, who is in business as a stationer in Western-road and Mr. W.H. Christian of Eastbourne. The funeral took place on Monday. The service at Belle Hill Chapel was conducted by the Rev. John W. Halliam in the presence of a large number of sympathisers, and the interment followed in the Borough Cemetery.
