Violet Ethel Ball was the daughter of Ferdinand and Elizabeth Ball. She was born in 1891, and in 1901 she was living with her parents at Holly Grange House, Pirbright, Surrey. Violet married Frederick Bernardus Dreyer on 10 August 1915 at Christ Church, Woking, Surrey. Frederick was the son of Johan Frederick Dreyer, described on the marriage certificate as a gentleman. Frederick was a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps. The witnesses at the Wedding were Violet’s mother and K Hewison. Violet and Frederick emigrated to South Africa in 1917. They sailed from Plymouth on the ‘Walmer Castle’, departing on 24 August, and arriving in Cape Town several days later. Violet made several visits to England after emigrating. She travelled from Cape Town to London in May 1922, accompanied by her three-year-old son Peter, and her father-in-law. She returned on 14 September with Peter, this time accompanied by her mother, Elizabeth, who then also settled in South Africa. The address in England from which they departed was 185 Walton Road, Woking, Surrey. Violet made another visit to England in 1934, where her proposed address in England was Devonshire Mansions, Great Portland Street, London W.1. She returned to South Africa the following year. Violet and Frederick's marriage was later annulled, and she came to England in 1957 as a single woman, sailing from Cape Town to Southampton on the ‘Arundel Castle’, and giving her proposed address as c/o Mrs Baker, at The Marina, Bexhill, Sussex. She returned to South Africa that same year. Frederick and Violet’s only son Peter married Mavis Brodie, and their three children were named Philip, Jane and John Peter. All were born in South Africa. |
