St Oswald's, Hooe

Sarah Freeman was born in Hooe, and was baptised in St Oswald’s Church on 12th July 1846.  After growing up in Hooe, the 1861 census shows that Sarah was in domestic service at a house in Bexhill.

She married James Clout, an agricultural labourer from Wadhurst, at St Oswald’s Church on 22nd August 1864. The witnesses at the wedding were Reuben French and Fanny Wise.

The couple later moved to Wadhurst, where they had eight children.  In the 1890s the family moved just across the border to Lamberhurst in Kent where James died in 1926, aged 84. Sarah died in 1935, aged 89.

Roy Thomas has provided the information for this page.  He has researched his family history extensively,
and is always interested to hear from distant cousins, and to help with research enquiries.
