Peter Smith was the eldest son of John Smith and Elizabeth Gander. He was born on 25 August 1819 in Chiddingly, East Sussex. Peter married Harriet Woodgate on 13 November 1841, in Lewes, East Sussex. The witnesses at the Wedding were Peter's sister Mary, and her husband Henry Peckham, who were married on the same day. Harriet was born c1821, in Waldron, East Sussex, and was the daughter of William Woodgate. At the time of the 1841 census Harriet was working as a servant at Waldron Water Mill. Little more is known about the couple, who appear to have lived in Chiddingly until their deaths, Harriet on 3 November 1899 and Peter on 24 December 1901.
