Mary Ann was the youngest daughter of Benjamin and Jane Vitler.  She was born c1870 in Chalk, Kent.

She married Benjamin Allen, a soldier, at Chalk on 29 March 1891.   Benjamin was the son of Henry Allen, and was born c1869.

Mary Ann and Benjamin had five children:

Henry Benjamin was baptised on 21 October 1894, at Chalk.

Phyllis Alberta was baptised on 18 October 1896, at Chalk.

Albert Edward was baptised on 21 January 1901, at Chalk.

Florence Elsie was baptised on 27 July 1902, at Chalk.

Gertrude Maud was baptised on 30 April 1905, at Chalk.

It is believed that the family lived at Northfleet, Kent from about 1902.
