Ashburnham lies about five miles west of Battle in East Sussex. The village is rather scattered, with just a handful of buildings spread across an area of a few square miles. The village was well known for its iron furnace, which was closed in 1813. The other main source of employment seems to have been at Ashburnham Place, where members of the Ashburnham family lived until the 1950s. The house is now a Christian conference centre. St Peter's Church lies within the grounds of Ashburnham Place, and until 1886 most inhabitants of the village were buried in the churchyard, after which time burials were conducted at Penhurst Church, about 1.5 miles away. |
