Lewis was born on 28 December 1849 at 14 St George’s Passage, Portsea.  He was the third son of Robert and Mary Ann Read, but his older brothers Robert John and William Charles died in 1847 and 1851 respectively.  Lewis was recorded, aged 11 years, on the 1861 census as being deaf.

Lewis married Sarah Moles on 15 April 1871 at Thundersley Parish Church, Essex.  At this time he was a printer.  Sarah, the daughter of Mark and Eliza Moles, was born on 28 January 1852 in Canewdon, Essex.  The witnesses at the wedding were Richard Penfold, Mark Moles, Eliza Moles and Elinger Moles.

Lewis and Sarah had eleven children, and the family lived in London, where Lewis worked as a printer compositor.  It is believed that Sarah died in the early 1900s.

Lewis died on 30 April 1906 at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, aged 56.  The informant was his daughter Ada Gibbins, and Lewis is believed to be buried in Finchley Cemetery.
