Julia was born on 24 May 1852, and was baptised in Hooe on 11 July 1852. She was the 11th child of Jeremiah & Ann Vitler, and the youngest of five daughters born to the couple. Her early life was spent in Hooe, and she continued to live there after her marriage to George Bartholomew on 15 April 1876. The witnesses at her wedding were Joseph Vitler and Alice Carey. Julia herself appears several times as a witness to family marriages. Julia & George had six children: George Henry, 1877-1957, married Louisa Naomi Catt. Grace Jemima, 1880-1944, married Edward Cramp. Ernest Arthur, born 1883, believed to have emigrated to British Columbia, Canada. Albert Charles, born 1884, married Charlotte Faulkner. Alice Mabel, 1889-1980, married Arthur Sargent. Alfred, born c1892. Some time between 1891 and 1901 Julia & George and their children moved to Laurel Cottage, Russell’s Green, near Ninfield. Julia & George spent the rest of their lives at Laurel Cottage. George died in 1929, aged 73. Julia lived with her daughter Grace and son in law Edward, until she died in 1934, aged 83. Both were buried at St Mary’s in Ninfield. |
