John Thompson was the eldest child of John and Catherine Thompson. He was christened on 11 May 1828 in St Mary's, Portsea. His early life was spent in Portsea, where he lived with his mother and half sisters. John married Anna Maria Henwood on 16 Aug 1856 in St Mary's, Portsea. Anna was born c1829, and was the daughter of John Henwood. It is possible that John and Anna (known as Hannah) had a child in the year before their marriage, as an Elizabeth Thompson Henwood was christened in the same church on 26 August 1855. Little is known about the family, except for information gathered from various census returns; in 1861 John & Hannah were living in Lydd in Kent, where John's occupation was a Boatman & Coastguard in the Royal Navy. 1871 finds them back in Portsea, with John described as a Royal Navy pensioner. John died in 1882, at the Haslar Royal Naval Navy Hospital in Gosport, and was buried in Kingston Cemetery, Portsmouth. Hannah later lived with her daughter, Catherine Pullen and her family in Arundel Street, Portsmouth. Hannah died in 1913, and was buried with John in Kingston Cemetery, Portsmouth.
