John Charles Shaw Haines was the first child of John & Sarah Haines, and was born in Hull, Yorkshire in England, on 5 January 1878. Sometime before 1881 the family moved south to Black Rock Coastguard Cottages, Rottingdean, near Brighton, where John's father was employed as a Coastguard. The family later moved to Eastbourne, where John's parents became the caretakers of the General Post Office. John, known as Jack, became a plumber, and later joined the Royal Navy at Portsmouth. He served as a plumber's mate on various ships until about 1903. John married Annie Godden on 30 January 1898 at All Souls Church, Eastbourne. Annie was the daughter of Thomas Godden and was born c1875. John and Annie's first child, John, born in 1899, died in infancy, and they later moved to Brighton, where their daughter was born in 1900. After his parents died, John & Annie moved to Portsmouth, where John found work as a Gas Fitter and Furniture Dealer. The family later emigrated to Canada, with John arriving in Quebec on 2 June 1911 aboard Ascania. Annie & Marjorie followed later, arriving in Quebec on 19 August 1911 aboard Ausonia. We believe the family settled in Ontario, and in 1915 John volunteered for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. John again volunteered for service, in 1942, during World War II, at which time he was living in New York.
Annie died on 11 November 1960, and
was buried in Victoria Lawn Cemetery, St Catharines, Ontario. |
