Corner House, Ashburnham

James was the first of two illegitimate sons born to Philadelphia Vitler.  His birth certificate records his date of birth as 10 April 1839, and he was baptised in Hooe on 26 May 1839.

On the 1841 census he was living at Crowhurst Cottage, Hooe with his grandparents William & Emma.  In 1851 he and his brother William lived at Late Coopers, Hooe with their aunt and uncle, Charlotte & Henry Lewis.

By 1861 he had moved to Ashburnham, where he was living at Kitchenham Farm and working as a shepherd.  James’s name changed to Vidler around this time, and most of his  11 children were recorded as Vidler.

James married Ruth Isted in Ashburnham on 10 July 1864.  The witnesses were Denis Clark and Sarah Isted.  Ruth was the daughter of Michael Isted and Elizabeth Ballard, who married in Ashburnham in 1834.  She was baptised in Ashburnham on 19 November 1843.  Ruth already had a daughter named Maria, born in 1861.

The family stayed in Ashburnham and in 1881 they were living at Corner House.  Ruth died in 1905, and James died in 1916.  They were both buried in Penhurst churchyard.
