James was the 13th child of William and Emma Vitler. He was baptised in Hooe on 17 October 1830, and spent his life in the village. At the time of the 1851 census he was staying with his brother Joseph, and sister in law Louisa (nee Parker), and was employed as a waggoner. Joseph died in 1853, and Louisa had two illegitimate children. She then married her brother in law, James on 11 June 1860, at All Saints Church in Hastings. James's name was recorded as Prior on the marriage certificate, and the witnesses at the wedding were Samuel Parker and John Le Hine. After their marriage the couple continued
to live in Hooe, and had four children. They appear on various census
returns living in Hooe, until Louisa died in 1895, and James died in 1907.
Both were buried in Hooe churchyard. |
