James was the fourth child of James & Ruth Vidler. He was born c1870 in Ashburnham, where he lived with his parents and 11 brothers and sisters. At the time of the 1891 census he was living in nearby Ninfield and working as a shepherd. On 9 June 1894 he married Sarah Jane Winchester at St Mary the Virgin, Ninfield, the witnesses were George Winchester and Alice Kenward. Sarah already had three children from a previous relationship: Henry George Winchester born 1885. Mary Roberts Winchester born 1890. Emily Roberts Winchester, born 1891. Married Henry Hicks on 27 April 1920 at Hollington, two daughters, Margaret and Brenda. On the 1901 census James, Sarah and Emily were living at Haddocks Hill, Bexhill, where James worked as a shepherd. Sarah’s grand-daughter Brenda remembers Sarah had beautiful snow-white hair and a wonderful singing voice, and definitely a strong personality. James died in Buchanan Hospital on 12 March 1934. He was still employed as an agricultural labourer at Beauport Home Farm, Hollington, where he and Sarah lived in a tied cottage. After his death Sarah went to live with her daughter Emily Hicks and her family. Her grand-daughter Brenda remembers having to move out of her bedroom so that Sarah could move in. Sarah died on 15 January 1938 at the Royal East Sussex Hospital. James and Sarah were buried in old Hollington churchyard.
