James Freeman was born in Hooe in 1842, the fifth child of Thomas Freeman and Emma Vitler. He was baptised at St Oswald’ Church, Hooe on 9th November 1842 and grew up in Hooe, where his father was an agricultural labourer. James married Esther Burt in St Oswald’s Church, Hooe on 31st October 1863. The witnesses at the wedding were the groom’s grandfather, Thomas Vitler, and Keziah Freeman, the wife of the groom’s elder brother. Esther was born in Hooe in 1845 and baptised in St Oswald’s Church on 20th April 1845. She was the daughter of William Burt and Eliza Robinson. James worked as an agricultural labourer like his father before him and died at Holmes Farm, Hooe in October 1891, aged 48. He was engaged in thatching a wheat stack and whilst performing the operation known as “combing” by some means slipped, and falling to the ground, sustained injuries that caused his death. He was buried at St Oswald’s Church on 6th October 1891. His widow, Esther, died in Hooe in 1909 and was buried with her husband on 22nd March 1909, aged 65.
