Hope Frank Nicholls was born c1875 in Canterbury, Kent, and was the eldest child of Thomas & Emily Nicholls.

Hope married Eliza Edith Mary Copper in St Margaret's Church, Rottingdean, Sussex on 25 November 1899.  The witnesses at the Wedding were Lilian Copper and Francis Copper.  Eliza, known as Edie, was the daughter of James & Emily Copper, and was born c1874 in Rottingdean, Sussex.

After their marriage Hope & Eliza moved to Horsham, where their son John was born.  At  the time of the 1901 census Hope was employed as a gardener.  We believe Hope & Eliza also had a daughter, Margaret.

The family later moved to St Dunstan's, Canterbury, where Hope ran a greengrocery shop for several years.  Hope's niece, Mary wrote a book about her early life in the St Dunstan's area - an extract from 'A Canterbury Girl' reads:

Our greengrocer was Hope Nicholls, my father's brother, whose shop was at No. 27, next to the railway crossing.  He and my Aunt Edith measured out potatoes by the pound in round wooden bowls and kept a block of dates on the counter, selling them for 4d a pound.  I liked buying dates.  Aunt Edith would cut them with a big knife.  They were very sticky but had a delicious flavour - they always tasted better then boxed ones!

Hope had a small holding in Salisbury Road and kept bees there.  He had a big Airedale dog, Whisky.  I was scared to death of him; he was certainly a good guard dog!

Eliza died on 13 February 1954 and Hope died in April,1956.  The couple are believed to be buried in St Margaret's churchyard, Rottingdean.
