Charles's Obituary

On Saturday week was interred, in Iden churchyard, all that was mortal of the late Mr Charles Southerden. Although living at a secluded spot like Camber, where the greater portion of his life was spent in reaping the ‘harvest of the sea’, he was well known, far and wide.

In March 1872, a testimonial, through the instrumentality of Mr James C. Vidler, consisting of his own portrait, was publicly presented to him by his friends and admirers, with the desire that it should be kept as an heirloom in his family.

‘Old Charley Southerden’ as he was familiarly called, has gone down to his grave, at the age of over four-score years, honoured and respected.
