Herbert William Charles was born in Ninfield in 1896.  During World War I, Herbert was a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps.  He married Nellie Marion Attwater (1899-1977) in St Andrew’s Church, Paddock Wood, Kent on 3rd April 1926.

Herbert worked as a lorry driver for a hardware shop in Chislehurst.  At the beginning of December 1933, following an accident, Herbert was taken to Cray Valley Hospital in Orpington.  Although it was known that Herbert was asthmatic, he was placed in a bed at a draughty end of the ward and his condition deteriorated.

He was transferred to Westminster Hospital where he died on 6th December 1933, aged 37, of pneumonia.  He was buried in the churchyard of the Church of the Annunciation, Chislehurst, Kent on 11th December 1933; he left a widow and a six-month-old son.

Nellie continued to live in Chislehurst after her husband’s death and died at home in May 1977, aged 78.  She was buried with her husband.

Herbert's Grandson, Roy Thomas has provided the information on theses pages.  He has researched his family history extensively, and is always interested to
hear from distant cousins and help with research enquiries.
