Henry Joseph Stephen Goldsmith Savers was the only son of Amelia Savers, and was born on 17 December 1848 in Whites Row, Portsea.  His birth certificate names his father as Henry Goldsmith, although there is no evidence to confirm that his parents were married.

His mother died in 1855, when he was six years old, and the following year Henry was baptised at St Mary's Church, Portsea.  Henry and his sister then went to live with their Aunt, Mary Ann Read, and her family.

Their Uncle, Robert Read, was a coastguard, and in about 1856 the family moved, first to Suffolk, then to Dover in Kent, and later to Gravesend.

Henry later joined the Royal Navy, and at the time of the 1871 census, was serving as an Ordinary Seaman aboard HMS Royal Oak, off the coast of Naples.  The photograph on the right is believed to be Henry, and was taken in Athens.

Henry's Naval record reveals that he also served on various ships, including the Ardacious, and the Iron Duke, between 1873 and 1876.  His record also shows that he spent short periods of time in Hull Goal.

Henry married Mary Pearson on 1 September 1880, in Hull, and their only child, Annie, was born in 1882.

Henry died on 30 September 1884 and was buried in Cleethorpes Cemetery.  The following year Mary married Charles Osborne.
