Helen, known as Nellie, was born on 18 January 1868, and was the third child of Sarah and George Hook.  She spent her early life in England before emigrating to live in New York in 1871, and adopting the surname Barrow.  Her mother died shortly after arriving in New York, and Nellie was taken into care.

Nellie married Richard Frances Coyle on 15 November 1893 in Brooklyn, New York.  Richard was a widower, and was born in London, England on 19 February 1850.  Nellie and Richard’s only child, Helen Clark Coyle was born on 29 October 1894, and was baptised in the Congregational Church of Brooklyn.  Richard died in 1895 and was buried in Brooklyn.

On 3 April 1906 Nellie married Samuel Munson Johnson in Amsterdam, New York.  He was born c1855 in Maine.  Samuel was a widower and had three children, Arthur, Walter and Lottie, who lived with their mother’s family.  After their marriage Nellie changed her name to Ellen and became known as Ellen Johnson.  Samuel and Ellen later had a daughter, Agnes.

Samuel died on 8 January 1917, and was buried in Braman Corner cemetery, Amsterdam, New York.  Ellen died on 14 December 1945, and was buried in Glen Falls cemetery, Glen Falls, New York.  Find her headstone in Round the Graveyard.
