Ivy's Memories of
|
Harry moved to Herne in 1936, when his parents sold the bakery and bought a general shop in Herne Street. Harry married Ivy Whitehead at St Martin’s Church, Herne, on 22 January 1941. Ivy was the daughter of Charles Whitehead, and was born in Herne in September 1910. Ivy’s father had built No 1 Church Cottages, which became Harry and Ivy’s home for the whole of their married life. Harry and Ivy did not have any children. After serving in the Army during World War II, Harry worked at Wachers in Herne Bay, and later in Canterbury, while Ivy spent much of her time at home, gardening, and taking part in events run by Herne’s local organisations. They were both enthusiastic cyclists, going for long rides with friends and a local club, in all weathers and at all seasons of the year. Later they enjoyed many coach holidays in Britain and on the Continent. After Harry died at home in 1998, Ivy continued to live in her cottage. The cottage had few modern amenities and cannot have been very comfortable, especially in the winter, but Ivy was happy there and never complained or wished for anything better. When she became housebound, her neighbours, other friends in the village, and professional carers, made frequent visits and went shopping for her. Eventually her health deteriorated and she had to move. She spent the last years of her life in a residential home in Herne Bay. Ivy remained bright and alert almost to the end of her life, and had many happy memories of Herne in days gone by. She was always grateful for everything that the staff at the home did to keep her comfortable. Ivy was, we believe, the last of the ‘Herne Whiteheads’ and she died on December 19, 2006.
