George is believed to be the fifth child of Thomas & Jane Vitler, although to date his baptism has not been found. He appears with them on various census returns. He married Ellen Cheal at Hooe on 28 May 1876. The witnesses at the wedding were Thomas Pocock and Mary Ann Pilbeam. Ellen already had a daughter, Amelia, and the couple went on to have fourteen more children: George and Ellen lived for a time at Bexhill after their marriage, but later returned to Hooe where they appear on several censues.
George died in 1914 and Ellen died in 1924,
both were buried in Hooe Churchyard, where there is a headstone in
Hooe Churchyard in memory of them and two of their sons. |
