George was the sixth child of Lewis & Sarah Read. He was born on 10 June 1880 in St George's Hanover Square, London. His early life was spent in London, where he appears with his family on several census returns. George married Eliza Hambleton on 29 October 1905, in St Peter's Church, Clerkenwell, London. The witnesses at the wedding were Thomas Ruggles and Sarah Large. Eliza was the daughter of Christopher and Martha (nee Stone) Hambleton. She was born on 1 August 1882 in Holborn, London. In approximately 1910 the family emigrated to Nova Scotia in Canada, where the youngest of their four children was born. George served in the Grenadier Guards
during the Boer War, and also in the 25th Nova Scotia Battalion during the
First World War. His attestation papers were signed on 22 January
1915. During his military service he received a leg wound, which
resulted in him having to wear a platform boot. |

| On 6 December 1917 there was an horrific
explosion in the harbour at Halifax, and whilst George was driving an
ambulance in the rescue effort he received a serious head injury. It
is not known whether this contributed to his death on
21 December 1925,
from an abscess on the brain. George was a member of the Imperial Veterans' Association, and his funeral was with military honours. He was buried in Camp Hill Cemetery, Halifax. Find his headstone in Round the Graveyard. Eliza continued her life in Halifax, and at the time of her death in 1962 was living with her daughter and son in law, Doris & William.
