Richard Gander (1622-1683) is our earliest known ancestor in this branch of the family. He is first recorded when the government imposed the first "Hearth Tax" in 1622, during the reign of Charles II. For everyone whose house was worth more than 20 shillings a year, and who was a local ratepayer of church and poor rates, a tax of two shillings was levied on each hearth in the household. Richard paid a Hearth Tax, in 1662 at Willingdon, on 4 Hearths. He left will which was made in 1679, and proved in 1683. See a transcription of his Will here. The Canadian branch of the family used the name Gandier and we believe that this Richard Gander was originally a Gandier, who fled to England from France. There is no evidence to back this up, but we have been unable to find any record of this man’s ancestors. A later branch of the Hooe Ganders went from paupers in the workhouse to landowners, by buying one field at a time. The family farmed School Farm in Hooe for over a hundred years, until it was was sold in 1988.
