Emily Freeman was born in Hooe in 1840, and baptised in St Oswald’s Church, Hooe on 16th August 1840.  It was customary in those times for girls to go into domestic service, and the 1861 census records that Emily was working as a housemaid, at 4 Robertson Terrace, Hastings.

She married James Balkham in St Mark’s Church, Bexhill on 18th December 1865, but after less than three years of marriage Emily died, aged 27.  She was buried at St Mark’s Churchyard, Bexhill on 29th March 1868.

James married Ann Coleman on 25 Decemeber 1871,  in Pevensey, where he died in 1911.
