Emily Freeman 1840-1868
 

St Mark's, Bexhill

Emily Freeman was born in Hooe in 1840, and baptised in St Oswald’s Church, Hooe on 16^th August 1840.  It was customary in those times for girls to go into domestic service, and the 1861 census records that Emily was working as a housemaid, at 4 Robertson Terrace, Hastings.

She married James Balkham in St Mark’s Church, Bexhill on 18^th December 1865, but after less than three years of marriage Emily died, aged 27.  She was buried at St Mark’s Churchyard, Bexhill on 29^th March 1868.

James married Ann Coleman on 25 Decemeber 1871,  in Pevensey, where he died in 1911.
