Three of Edward’s older brothers died during childhood, he was also to lose his younger sister and three younger brothers; so from a total of nine children Edward was the youngest of only two who survived. Edward was baptised with his sister Mary Jane on 14 August 1859 at St Margaret’s Bay in Kent. He married Kate Ball on 22 January 1887 at Holy Trinity Church in Milton, Gravesend, Kent. At this time he was living in Sunbury on Thames. Kate born c1857 and was the daughter of Frederick and Mary Ball. Shortly after their marriage Edward and Kate moved to Lordship Lane, Tottenham where Edward ran his own grocery business. The couple went on to have four daughters. At the time of the 1891 census the family were living in Buxton Road, Stratford. Their niece, Ada Read was living with them. By 1901 the family had moved to Ramsgate, where Edward was a Grocer’s assistant, and by 1909 Edward and Kate were living at Oakleigh in Grays, Essex. Two years later, when Kate died suddenly aged 53, they were living at 6 Coastguard’s Cottages, Clacton. Kate was buried in Clacton cemetery. Find her headstone in Round the Graveyard. From Kate’s obituary notice in the newspaper we know that Edward was a former member of the choir at St James’ Church, Clacton.
