Dennis was the eldest child of James and Louisa Vitler, he was born in Hooe, where he was baptised on 27 April 1862. He spent his early life in Hooe, but by 1881 had moved to Westham, where he was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1887 he had moved again, to Bexhill,
where he married (Susan) Emily Wiggett on 14 September. The witnesses
at the wedding were his sister Edith and her future husband Thomas
Christian.

Emily Wiggett was the illegitimate daughter of Alice Wiggett, and was born on 7 November 1861 in Union Workhouse, Winchcomb, Gloucestershire. After their marriage Dennis and Emily continued to live in Bexhill, where they raised 8 children. Dennis died in 1945 and Emily in died 1949, they were both buried in Bexhill Cemetery.
