Caroline, the eldest daughter of John and Hannah Ball, was born on 28 October 1820, and baptised at St Clement Danes, in the Strand, London, on 3 December 1820. In the 1841 census, Caroline was living with her parents, at No 20 St George’s Place, Hanover Square, London. In the 1851 census we find her as a visitor at Fore Street, Stoke Damerel, Plymouth, Devon, in the home of widower, Benjamin Moon. Benjamin, a silk mercer and tailor, was probably an old friend of the Ball family, being in the same trade as Caroline’s father, John. Caroline married Benjamin Moon on 7 September 1854, at St. Gabriel’s church, Pimlico, where their witnesses were John and Maria Ball. Benjamin was born c1801, in Cornwall, and is believed to be the son of Edmund and Honor Moon. After their marriage the Caroline and Benjamin moved back to live in Devon. Benjamin was almost 22 years older than Caroline, and after only four years of marriage he died, on 9 April 1858, leaving his estate in trust for her to share equally between herself and his four children. At the time he made his Will, four days earlier, a witness testified that Benjamin was so ill he could not physically sign it, but had a make a cross instead. After his death Caroline moved in with her parents, who by now had also returned to live in Devon, and later found employment as a schoolmistress. In the 1881 census she and her sister Hannah were living at 30 Duke Street, Stoke Damerel, both working as needlewomen. It was Hannah who was present at Caroline’s death, from typhoid fever, on 15 April 1881. Caroline was buried in Stoke Damerel.
