There’s
a little spot in England
Beside
the deep blue sea
To
which my thoughts are turning
In
fondest memory
Tis
the land of ancient manors
Where
the ivy vines do climb
And
holly berries glisten
On
walls at Christmas time

Twas
down this old shady lane
We
daily trudged to school
There
we learned our ABCs
Were
taught the golden rule
On
Sundays in this same schoolhouse
We
little children met
And
learned the Bible stories
Which
we never shall forget

Across
those waving cornfields
With my
beloved grandfather
Who
taught me to trust in God
And to
be always truthful
In all
that I should say
And
early in the lesson
To walk
in wisdom’s way

On this
coast of dear old England
Rough
rocks stretch far to sea
‘Twas
there the dark blue water
Did
chant so endlessly
On its
sands lay pebbles and shells
Tossed
there in the sea’s uproar
With
delight we picked up these treasures
When we
walked on this enchanted shore

In
nearby rolling meadows
With
hedgerows all around
The
yellow downy primrose
And
doddle grass were found
While
hanging o’er the hedges
Where
blackberries, ripe and sweet
And
liitle meadow daisies
Made a
starry carpet for our feet

But
best of all he taught me
Of
death to have no fear
That
there was a home in heaven
When
life was ended here
Think
you theses precious precepts
Could
e’er from soul depart
Thus so
early engraven
On the
tablets of my heart?

‘Neath
tall and stately elms
Dear
Bexhill’s grand old trees
Whose
topmost lofty branches
Entwine
their soft and graceful leaves
There’s
a lovely lane named Chantry
A
well remembered favourite walk

Again I
hear the cuckoos calling
I
hear the thrushes sing
I see
the nodding poppies
Like
birds upon the wing
For in
the waving cornfields
Peeping
through the green
Those
little scarlet fairies

O
England! Noble England!
Land of
my birth and pride
Where the Union Jack is floating
Long
may it there abide
May God
protect that country
That
land so dear to me
In
every conflict for the right
May she
victorious be
